As 2013 came to an end, I was busy preparing for my 20014 T.O.M. (Technique Of the Month) classes. In so doing, I completed two additional quilted projects:

Trim the Tree
(72″ x 25″ )
Pieced, quilted, and embellished by Sue Hickman Berryville, Va 11/2013
Created using pattern by Cindi Edgerton.
I even made a companion ornament to hang on it, though that isn’t the only one that will grace this tree. For 35+ years I’ve been making Christmas ornaments, flat and stuffed, of various mediums: quilted, cross stitch, embroidered, and lace angels… and now they have a special tree all their own. My husband and I are enjoying counting down the 25 days until Christmas with this “grown-up” Advent Calendar Tree! We began on December 1st and will add an ornament to the tree each day until Christmas. The last ornament, of course, is a Nativity Scene (cross stitched).

Vintage Christmas …and the greatest of these is Love
(74″ x 76″)
Pieced and Appliqued by Sue Hickman Berryville, Va 7/2013
Using ‘Vintage Rouge’ pattern by Faye Burgos for Marcus Fabrics.
Yes, I’ve quilted for decades, but it wasn’t until my eye caught this design and these fabrics that I succumb to the charm of making a “BOM” (block of the month) quilt. The pattern is called Vintage Rouge, but I thought of Christmas from first glance. Perhaps it is because of the red and green colors, but it is also the embroidered words, Love, Hope, Peace, and Joy, that speak to the true meaning of Christmas.
Hickman Hens
(38.5″ Sq.)
Pieced, quilted, and embellished by Sue Hickman Berryville, VA 7/2013
Using ‘Home to Roost’ pattern by Bonnie Sullivan of All through the Night.
When traveling out west, I found this delightful pattern and fun flannel fabrics in the Seasons of Home quilt shop in quaint Midway, UT. It is rare that I don’t somehow personalize a published pattern. In this case, I changed the featured hens to represent the breeds of our initial flock: Mary and Buffy (Ameraucanas), Dottie (Golden Laced Wyndotte), Alice, Annie, and Aussie (Black Australorps), Red and Ruby (Rhode Island Reds), Sassy and Sallie (Speckled Sussex), and our Roo-Copper (Blue Copper Maran). This quilt honors them all, for they have truly found a place in my heart.

Civil War Remembrances, in honor of The Civil War 150 Year Anniversary
(88″ x 98″)
Pieced by Sue Hickman Berryville, Va 3/2013
This scrappy queen-sized quilt was completed to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of The Civil War. Its 56 blocks feature Civil War reproduction fabrics and the centers highlight important people and events pivotal to the war. Down the side border of the quilt are the words of the final paragraph of President Abraham Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address on Saturday, March 4th, 1865. This address was given just a little more than a month before he was assassinated. The top border features Union soldiers and General Ulysses S. Grant, the victors. The bottom border features Confederate soldiers and General Robert E Lee.
Adapted from Carol Hopkins Designs Civil War Legacies ‘Remembrances’ pattern.
This quilt was shown at the Northern Shenandoah Valley Quilt Show in 2013.
This quilt was also shown in the 2014 Quilter’s Unlimited 41st Annual Quilt Show at the Dulles Expo center.
A June Block
One of a set of 12 for a quilted calendar hanger given to our outgoing Reston Quilter’s Unlimited President… I chose this block out of the 12 different month patterns because I just love being a Flip-flop CEO year round!
Pieced and quilted by Sue Hickman Berryville, Va 3/2013
One Block Wonderful
(72″ x 62″)
Pieced by Sue Hickman Berryville, Va 1-2013
In this piece I used a technique that utilizes striped border fabric, then I gave the finished piece a bold border of its own.
Scrappy Kaffe
(77.5″ x 69″)
Designed and pieced by Sue Hickman, 1-2013 Berryville, VA 1/2013
Finished with long-arm quilting.
I have long delighted in the bright, bold, beautiful fabrics of Kaffe Fassett, but it wasn’t until the fall of 2012, while traveling with my husband to the Virginia Wood Turners Convention, that I found such a spectacular collection of Kaffe Fassett fabrics I could no longer resist selecting a dozen “fat quarters” for myself. These didn’t remain long in my “stash”. I was inspired to cut four squares from each of the twelve fat quarters I had bought and I “snowballed” the corners. They became the focused blocks in this piece. The diagonals are created from blocks I created using fabrics I found in a pack containing 5″ pieces of a variety of Kaffe Fassett fabrics. The yellow background fabric tied this piece all together.
This quilt was shown in the 2013 Quilter’s Unlimited 40th Anniversary Quilt Show at the Dulles Expo Center.
