A Long Winter for Neighbors & Friends
(31″ x 30.5″)
This top was made with shared hand pieced blocks (designed by Sue) and then hand quilted by Sue Gauldin (Hickman) in Cross Junction, Va. during the long hard winter of 1993–1994. Neighbors made stir-crazy by storm after storm asked me to teach them to quilt. I designed these blocks to represent each of our home (note one didn’t have a chimney). Fabrics used represented the colors of our homes, front doors, and roofs.
It was my pleasure to share this quilt and its story in the Barns of Rose Hill “Quilts and their Stories” exhibit February 15th – March 15th, 2015.

A Friendship Quilt made with neighbor and friend, Nancee Groh – El Paso, TX 1991
Hand pieced and quilted by Sue Gauldin (Hickman) using blocks made by Nancee Groh.
This friendship quilt was designed by Sue Gauldin (Hickman) and Nancee Groh, both military wives sharing a duplex on Ft. Bliss in El Paso, TX in 1991. It was a wonderful preoccupation in the midst of the turmoil of the time. Nancee made these blocks and Sue put together the top and quilted it. (Nancee’s quilt with Sue’s blocks is still nearly completed.)
Each hand pieced block holds special symbolism:
January – Patience Corner – as the war in Iraq began (‘Yellow’ bow in center for remembrance)
February – Right Hand of Friendship… a foundation for this quilt
March – Virginia Star – Birth month to VA born Ken Gauldin (Sue’s husband, now deceased)
April – Card Trick – for Nancee’s birthday, April 1st
May – Stamp Basket
June – Bridal Bouquet – Groh anniversary & Nancee’s daisy bouquet & center shows Sue’s June birthday/ Flag Day
July – Patriotic Bear’s Paw (Nancee makes stuffed bears)
August – Jacob’s Ladder
September – Single Wedding Ring – Gauldin anniversary month with pieced Evergreen center for “their song”
October – Ohio Star – Birth month to Ohio born Jeff Groh, Nancee’s husband
November – Original design representing our duplex – quilting shows a cloud over Nancee’s half of the duplex because she had moved by the time this quilt was quilted… but the smoke coming out of Sue’s chimney shows she still lived there.
December – Joy Bells – for Christmas
The “yellow ribbon” border with bow ties it all together with remembrance.
This quilt showed at the 2008 Northern Shenandoah Valley Quilt Show, held in Berryville, Va.
A Family Tree for the Drake’s 60th Wedding Anniversary
(70.5″ x 43″)Designed, pieced, and appliqued using family members’ traced hands and hand quilted by Sue Gauldin (Hickman) El Paso, Tx 1993
This quilt was made and given to my grandparents [William & Vivian (Mimi) Drake] on the occasion of their 60th wedding anniversary. As a cherished treasure, it hung in their home in Green Valley, Az, and later in my grandfather’s room at Westminster Canterbury in Winchester, Va until his passing. My sister-in-law was pregnant at the time of its making, thus the heart inside her hand. Spouses and children born after its making were represented by hearts later added. It notes: “Memories we collect and give brighten our lives as long as we live.”
It was my pleasure to share this quilt and its story in the Barns of Rose Hill “Quilts and their Stories” exhibit February 15th – March 15th, 2015.
